It's to improve the flow of balls into his gun because he's shooting downwa rds. If you've ever seen or used a Halo, you'll understand.

the hopper backwards allows everyone to shoot all the balls when the marker is pointing in a downward direction. This is because when the halos are pointed down about 30 balls are left in the front of the halo without gett ing into the cone. DUH
